1. Role Overview
The Senior Drilling Engineer will support front-end well planning, detailed well design, and
execution readiness for offshore and deepwater exploration and development wells in Malaysia.
The role requires strong technical depth in deepwater drilling, HPHT environments, and
subsea well construction, with the ability to operate effectively in frontier exploration settings.
The successful candidate will work closely with subsurface, project, HSE, procurement,
contractors, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure wells are delivered safely, efficiently, and
within approved cost and schedule.
2. Key Responsibilities
● Lead and support well planning and well design activities for offshore exploration and
development wells, including deepwater and subsea wells.
● Prepare and review Basis of Well Design (BoWD), well concept select, and detailed
drilling programmes.
● Develop and verify casing design, trajectory design, hydraulics, torque & drag, and
well integrity philosophy using industry-standard software.
● Support planning for wildcat / frontier wells, managing uncertainty in subsurface data
and operational risks.
● Provide technical input for deepwater drilling campaigns, including rig selection, well
construction methodology, and contingency planning.
● Support application of advanced drilling technologies (e.g. RMR, MPD, specialised well
architectures) where required.
● Ensure readiness for offshore challenges including narrow operating windows,
logistics constraints, and environmental sensitivities.
● Ensure full execution readiness through risk assessment, HAZID, risk registers, and
well stage-gate processes.
● Provide operational support during drilling execution, including office-based and
offshore support as required.
● Monitor drilling performance, manage technical issues, and support resolution of drilling
challenges to minimise NPT.
● Interface with procurement and contracting teams on rig and drilling services strategy,
tender preparation, and technical evaluations.
● Support AFE preparation, cost estimation, and cost optimisation, ensuring alignment
with project budgets and schedules.
● Work closely with contractors and service providers to ensure safe, efficient, and
compliant execution.
● Ensure compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and
international codes applicable to offshore and deepwater drilling.
● Support preparation and submission of regulatory documentation and engagement with
relevant authorities.
● Promote a strong HSE culture, prioritising safety and environmental protection in all
drilling activities.
3. Key Requirements
● Degree in Petroleum Engineering or equivalent.
● Minimum 10+ years’ experience in drilling engineering roles, with hands-on exposure
to offshore drilling.
● Demonstrated deepwater drilling experience (planning and/or execution) is strongly
required.
● Experience with HPHT wells, subsea wells, or frontier exploration campaigns is highly
advantageous.
● Proficiency with drilling and well engineering software (e.g. Landmark suite, WELLCAT,
StressCheck, WELLPLAN or equivalent).
